Kadisco-approved Wordpress themes

Posted on 05. Feb, 2009 in Personal

In addition to the recent redesign of my own site, I’m also working on a demo online magazine to show some people at the Tour of California. Both are built on the Wordpress platform, so I’ve looked at literally hundreds of themes between the two projects. Here are the two I’ve settled on.

The Morning After

TMA is the theme that I customized for this site. I wanted a look that was not a typical vertical blog and that could more effectively highlight specific pages and posts. I really like the homepage layout, although I’ve changed the content of the various sections quite a bit and removed the Featured Post and Asides. The major structural change that I made was creating a wider sidebar for the interior pages. Anyways, I dig this theme.

The Stars

In addition to the Popsugary colors, this theme uses some cool AJAX features for the headlines and sidebars, which works for this kind of magazine layout. Quality of the automatically processed images isn’t great, but I’ll be digging into that more.

I’m thinking that my installation will cut the 300×250 ad placement and move the most rated/viewed/commented box to the top of the sidebar. Other additions to the sidebar will be a search box, Twitter statuses and a couple lines of Flickr thumbnails (squares), and maybe category and/or monthly archives. I really like the way the sections are displayed under Latest News, but I may change that to authors instead of categories since that’s how my potential clients are likely to organize information.
