Last day at the Allied Box Factory

Working from home sounds great, but you have to have a home. If all you have is a San Francisco-size bedroom and a living room that you share with roommates, it doesn’t work so well. That’s why I decided four years ago to rent a desk space from Monte Stott & Associates in the former Allied Box Factory (map). Since then, I’ve come to work every day in a beautiful space with great friends.

But now, after moving from San Francisco to Oakland last summer, I have room in my apartment for a dedicated workspace and an hour daily commute. Over the last couple months, I simply haven’t been using the Box Factory as much as I used to. It’s time to pack up and move Kadisco from The City to The Town.

For better or worse, work is a (and sometimes the) focal point of our lives. I work for myself in an industry that overlaps with my lifelong passion, so moving out of the space where I got my start and learned so much feels a bit like moving out of the house I grew up in. The work that I’ve done here hasn’t changed the world or made anyone rich, but I’m proud of it… and I’m grateful to my officemates for putting up with inflow of bikes and related products that have accumulated over the years. In particular, I’m sorry about the time that a palette of Clif Bars sat in the middle of the office for a week while I was at the Tour de Georgia.

Monte – you have taught me nothing about structural engineering or bicycles, but a great deal about everything else. Thank you.
