Back in the day

Packing up my office at the Allied Box Factory last week unearthed a trove of marketing collaterals from the 2005 and 2006 Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada teams: six-pack carriers, media kits, team cards, and more. Despite our meager budget, this stuff came out nicely and I think it compares favorably to most of what’s been generated by much bigger teams since then. The six-pack carriers never made it onto shelves, unfortunately.

That first year, we had a problem with our would-be clothing sponsor and had to order kits at the last minute from Louis Garneau. The riders didn’t get them until Redlands, where we did this photo shoot in the park after the prologue. The Oak Glen stage was the next day and the guys were understandably annoyed about spending a couple hours riding in circles getting their pictures taken by Casey B. Gibson.
The next year, everything was dialed in for the training camp in Sonoma. John Segesta came up from San Diego and we took the group shot and individual rider shots in the driveway in front of the house that the team rented for the week. For the group action shots, I talked someone at Infineon Raceway into letting us use the track for free. Turns out that the driving school was hosting a VIP event for execs from Visa that day and the boss of the guy who ok’d our shoot wasn’t happy with him or us. Segesta got some great shots and we gave them some beer, so it all worked out in the end.

Take it from me, team credentials are the best. You get access to areas that even the media can’t get into. Here’s a picture of Pete Lopinto from inside the start house at the 2006 Tour of California time trial in South San Jose.

Back then, I’d have an album of shots like this posted within an hour or two of the finish. Too bad they were all on Kodak Gallery where no one could find them.
