Quick update from Indy

I’m in Indianapolis, spending a couple days at Zipp’s facility in nearby Speedway as we get started on the 2010 catalog. Fred Hammerquist and Troy Nebeker were here today; their firm will be handling design for the catalog. I’m certain it will be an improvement on these earlier vintages…

Today Zipp’s engineers gave us an all-access tour of the in-house manufacturing facility where every Zipp rim is made by hand. Having worked with Zipp for over a year, what really impressed me was that they put the same level of engineering and technology into their processes as they do into the products themselves. Many of their machines and tools are custom-built. Unfortunately, I can’t really show any pictures of those.
But here’s a bike that I was really stoked to see, one of Jacky Durand’s GTs from the Lotto days. Everyone remembers Jacky for his solo breakaways but he also played a major role in popularizing aero equipment for road racing.

Hopefully I’ll get the go-ahead to post some factory shots tomorrow.
