A winged horse teaches us about sponsorship and funding

Sponsorship and investment funding are different ways of getting money to run a cycling team, and the lack of clarity around that difference is a major source of the confusion around what’s actually happening with Pegasus Racing. My best guess is that they never had a major sponsor on board for their would-be ProTour squad. Instead, they found someone who agreed to fund the team until they could sign a sponsor. Then that investor decided to do something else with his money.

2 new releases from BDW

Three months ago, I came to Boulder Digital Works to learn and collaborate in new ways. This week, my first two experiments in that process were released. Zombies vs. Hippies is a mobile game developed in conjunction with Austin-based Exopolis as a pilot program for Microsoft Tag. DoYouHave5Dollars uses the mechanics of daily-deal and limited-sale websites to make it easy for people learn about issues and contribute to nonprofit organizations.

Who would win in a fight between a user and a designer?

In the two months that I’ve spent at BDW, we’ve learned a lot about user-centric design, mostly through our work with the Interaction Design Association. But we’ve also heard from some really talented people about their personal creative processes and seen the amazing work that they’ve produced. At this point, those are the two outlooks that will drive much of what we do over the next year and possibly well beyond our time here in Boulder.

Tumbleweeds at Interbike

Note the distinct lack of crowdedness in the background.

In general terms, Interbike’s malaise has been attributed to a couple problems that are pretty specific to bike manufacturers. But the big change from last year to this year was the number of non-bike companies that opted not to exhibit even though they have shorter lead times and can fill small orders whenever. In other words, Interbike isn’t working for the companies that it should still be working for.

How to draw a stick figure

Ahmed Riaz is awesome at drawing stick figures – and I mean that as a serious compliment. As part of one of our big projects at BDW, he came in via Skype and showed us different ways of using very simple sketches to convey nuanced designs and emotions. Here’s my sketch for the class (working title: Buddies!) and Ahmed’s presentation.

Big changes at Kadisco

I’ve recently moved from the Bay Area to Boulder to attend the Boulder Digital Works graduate program at the University of Colorado. BDW’s project-based curriculum combines web technology, design, strategy, and business — and will allow me to continue working with clients.

The top 150 words in the new Zipp Catalog

I’ve been in Boulder for a couple weeks now and still haven’t found time to really collect my thoughts about the move and start of my grad program at Boulder Digital Works. But I did come across a neat site called Wordle that created this “word cloud” from the 6100+ words I wrote for the 2011 Zipp catalog.

New Bikes Rule

I’ve had this new Franco Balcom frameset for a couple months now, and just recently finished building it up with a new SRAM RED group and Zipp 101 wheelset. It’s fast, it fits, and it looks cool. What more can you ask for?

The day Le Tour stood still

Twelve years ago today, the peloton refused to ride. What started as the Festina Affair had engulfed TVM and other teams. A complete shutdown of the Tour de France seemed like a real possibility. What were the riders actually protesting? In the years since, have they gotten what they wanted?
