Throwback saddles

Hard. Skinny. Lightweight. Minimalist. These terms describe neither my butt nor anything on which I’d prefer to sit. So the recent trend towards saddles that look like miniature Star Wars ships has left me shaking my head. Fortunately, both Selle Italia and Selle San Marco have heeded the call of cycling’s collective consciousness that harkens back to the days before power meters, when doping was called “preparation” and saddles were built like furniture.

ATOC Revisited

A year ago today was the last stage of the Tour of California. 100 miles up and over Mt. Palomar. The final act of 9 grueling days on the road. The experienced challenged me in more significant ways than I’d expected. But it was an adventure, and those are always to be relished.

I heart frame pumps

When it comes to mid-ride inflation, you’ve got three options: a frame pump, CO2, or a mini pump. In my opinion, the frame pump is the all-around best tool for the job and it actually makes me a little sad to see how few people still ride with one. I’d even go so far as to say that the frame pump reflects humility and functionality in cycling culture. Maybe I’m reading too much into this.

Interbike Day 1

You might be surprised to learn that this was my first year visiting the Outdoor Demo at Interbike. As many have noted, the nature of Interbike is changing as large and medium-size brands pull up stakes. For me at least, this made it even more important to check out the Demo this year in order to see the likes of Trek, Felt, Specialized, Cannondale, etc. I found that it was kind of like Sea Otter, but without the 15-year-olds. And I went mountain biking!

I’m not exactly a daily blogger, but a gap of two-plus weeks since my last post is a bit much even by my standards. Things have been crazy busy but are now settling down slightly, so I figured I’d take this opportunity to share the recent goings-on at Kadisco. Big Project #1 that recently wrapped up was copywriting for Zipp’s 2010 catalog. Big Project #2 has been taking over online and offline marketing and communications for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.

As of last night, I have broken my unintentional streak of missing the Bicycle Film Festival. Brendt Barbur and Friends try to select film that cover the breadth of the bicycle universe and, over the course of a Saturday evening, I watched more than a dozen ranging from 1 to 75 minutes. Back in the day

Packing up my office at the Allied Box Factory last week unearthed a trove of marketing collaterals from the 2005 and 2006 Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada teams: six-pack carriers, media kits, team cards, and more. Despite our meager budget, this stuff came out nicely and I think it compares favorably to most of what’s been generated by much bigger teams since then. The six-pack carriers never made it onto shelves, unfortunately.
