Mobile Gaming // Microsoft Tag

At least in my experience, Microsoft Tag performs more reliably than QR codes, and has better tools for developers. Of course, the problem for campaigns using any form of 2d barcodes is getting people to actually scan them, and college students are no exception. So to uncover insights and practical applications for Tag, Microsoft and digital creative agency Exopolis asked the students at Boulder Digital Works to develop a Tag-based game on and around the CU-Boulder campus. We came up with Zombies Vs Hippies.

As the Project Lead and Technical Director, I kept all aspects of the project on track while also coding the bulk of our custom front-end and back-end features. Fortunately, I was working with a boatload of witty and gruesome graphics and copy from a talented creative team.

"This campaign explores the potential of mobile technology to create interactive and entertaining experiences. The outcomes of Zombies vs Hippies will open a few doors on the ways college kids use their mobile devices beyond traditional information and communication tools..." - Agency Spy

I built the site on WordPress and BuddyPress, with a custom, mobile-optimized theme and functionality to track users' points from scanning more than 50 unique Tags.
